Baby Blessings or Welcoming Rites have been popular throughout time in many different cultures and religions, and go by various names. Sometimes, a baby blessing is also a naming ceremony for the new child.
While a baby blessing can be done at any time you wish, one option to consider is holding the ceremony on the first full moon after the baby’s birth to present the new baby to the moon and to the earth as a member of your family. Most perform a baby blessing during the first year of the baby’s life, but again, this is up to the parent or parents.
Baby blessings are a great way to introduce your new child to the community, a celebration of the new life and family.
Here are some ideas you could include in a Baby Blessing:
- Sharing the name you’ve chosen for the child, and what meaning the name might have or why you chose it.
- Blessing of the baby according to your beliefs or desires. I am partial to invoking the elements and blessing the child with each of the elements.
- Choosing of the godparents / spiritual parents / spiritual siblings.
- Speaking of vows to the child.
- Bringing gifts to the child, such as books, clothes, toys, or keepsakes.
- Blessing stones; have a jar of crystals that each guest takes and sends positive energy into for the child. Keep them in a jar or bag for the child.
- Planting a tree, flower, or bush (and can even plant the placenta with it) for the child.
I would be honored to assist in planning, as well as officiating your next Baby Blessing!
